Kraft paper is becoming more popular for all sorts of packaging, from wrapping paper to paper mailing bags. It’s a great material for those trying to be more environmentally conscious, as it’s fully recyclable. Businesses are trying to be a lot more aware of the impact that traditional packaging has on the environment, which is why they are looking at how they can switch things up with sustainable packaging. They can also check out the sustainability glossary to see what else they can do to support this transition.
In a step toward reducing plastic use, many shops are now beginning to make the switch from plastic bags to alternative versions such as cotton, jute, or paper bags. But what is Kraft paper, and why is it used for bags?
What is Kraft Paper?
Kraft paper products are made using the Kraft process, hence the name, which is similar to regular paper production methods. This method was pioneered by Carl F. Dahl of Germany in the 1880s.
Normally, in the manufacture of paper, wood is ‘pulped’ first, but Dahl found that treating the pulp with certain chemicals increased the strength of the paper. Kraft in German means ‘strength’, so it was aptly named because it was more durable than regular paper.
Most Kraft paper also doesn’t involve extensive bleaching, keeping it stronger and also cheaper to produce than some products. Kraft is also 100% eco-friendly as it can either biodegrade within a few weeks or be recycled for future use.
Why Kraft is perfect for paper bags?
Easy personalisation
Kraft paper bags are perfect for personalisation and are often a popular choice amongst companies who want to be eco-friendly but also want to add their branding or a more personal touch to their packaging products.
Kraft can be turned in to paper bags of varying shapes, sizes, and colours which can then be printed on for further personalisation. There are endless possibilities for designs, and you can choose different handles for added strength.
Durability and Sustainability
As mentioned, Kraft is made from a process that makes it more durable than regular paper. This high-strength paper makes it a great choice for paper bags as it can hold heavier items without risk of breaking, whilst still being easily recyclable or biodegradable.
Paper bags are becoming more and more popular in shops across the UK and the World, as customers look for businesses that are offering a more eco friendly alternative to plastic bags.
Cost effective
Kraft bags are more cost effective to manufacture, and so end up cheaper for customers to buy in bulk too. They are one of the most cost effective eco bags both to produce and to purchase, making them an eco-bag which won’t break the bank!
If you are looking to move away from plastic in both a business sense, and a personal sense, then paper bags are a fantastic choice. Whilst jute, cotton, and other eco bags are durable and eco-friendly, they can often take up a lot of space and be more expensive than paper bags. In comparison, Kraft paper bags can be supplied free or for little cost by businesses and can then be used for crafts, recycled, or put in to compost once used.
